HIV and AIDS-related stigma and discrimination can amount to prejudice, negative attitudes, abuse and maltreatment. Additionally, poor healthcare, lack of education and awareness can adversely affect approach to testing and treatment. Discrimination towards HIV and AIDS victims exist worldwide, although they are manifested differently across different countries, communities and groups. The Tibetan community is no exception.
Tibetan people living with HIV/AIDS experience segregation and humiliation in their daily life. The shame and scandal associated with this affliction dissuades victims from seeking help further marginalizing them from the society. Generally, most families living with HIV/AIDS come from poor financial background. Their physical health conditions disable them from performing any physical work. Additionally, the medical expenses and consultations further deplete their resources. However, in order to sustain longevity they require nutritious diet and proper medication that require a lot of money which they cannot afford.
CHOICE-HIV/AIDS Initiative launched project ‘Adopt HIV/AIDS Family’. This Project aims to connect Tibetan people infected and affected with HIV/AIDS with non-infected individual/family or organization who will financially support People Living with HIV and Aids (PLHA). This support will not only ensure them better treatment and sustenance but also a better quality of life which will enable them to feel accepted in the society giving them the confidence to be spokesperson for HIV/AIDS. One of the biggest preventive measures for such affliction is education and awareness.
The first challenge of the project is to identify PLHA and affected families in various Tibetan settlements in India, Nepal and Bhutan. However, the first step is to find individuals and families and organizations willing to support. Willing supporters will encourage affected people to come forward to seek help.
Give a thought. Your support can give a new ray of HOPE.
Become a sponsor today! Tibetans living abroad as well as affluent families or Individuals in India can contribute 3,000 Rs a month cover medical expenses and supplementary diet. That is hardly a hundred rupees or two dollars a day! but can mean so much for the family and children of the affected families.
CHOICE will facilitate the role of connecting the sponsor and beneficiary and thereafter Choice will have no interference and there will be direct contact between the two.
CHOICE provides support services to several HIV/AIDS families residing in various Tibetan settlements in India through CHOICE’s ‘Care & Support Program’. We recognize that every phase of our programs should begin from the grassroots level and be responsive to people’s needs. The aim of the project Adopt HIV Family is to help the Tibetan families infected and affected by HIV/AIDS and who are in need of financial and emotional support.
