CHOICE—HIV/AIDS Initiative (CHAI) is a non-profit and Non-Governmental Organization based in Dharamshala, India. Since its inception on April 10, 2007, CHAI has evolved into a key community player in reducing the incidence of HIV infection in Tibetan refugee communities across India and Nepal. Our initiative has developed and implemented comprehensive HIV programs using

CHOICE—HIV/AIDS Initiative, since its inception on April 10, 2007 and the Society Registration on April 28, 2008 under the Government of India Act of 1860 with Registration no. CHRC 4287, And Income Tax Registration with PAN No. AABTC0902 A, had successfully and strictly pursued its Aims and Objectives enshrined in its Memorandum of Understanding & Memorandum of Article.

For the past six years, CHOICE team consisting of Dr. Tenzin Namdul, Mr. Lobsang Yeshi, Nurse Tsering Paldon, Mr. Phuntsok Chomphel and Dr. Yangzom Dolkar had conducted over 162 HIV/AIDS awareness Workshops, Trainings and Networking programs, effectively reaching out to over 40,000 people directly or indirectly.

In 2010, CHOICE was able to form a “Network of Positive People” in three major Tibetan settlements and is supporting 40 HIV infected individuals and their families under CHOICE’s ‘Adopt an HIV Family’ program. CHOICE facilitated sponsors to scores of PLHA to support them financially. CHOICE also facilitated admission of children of the financially constrained PLHA into Tibetan schools with the support of The Private office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Department of Health (CTA), Tibetan Children Village and Tibetan Homes Foundation schools.

While enduring numerous challenges, including financial and human resources, CHOICE team had received tremendous support and encouragement from various Governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations and individuals.

At the same time, CHOICE’s very existence has also been possible with the sole fund-raising efforts by Dr. Tenzin Namdul (Executive Director, CHOICE), especially in New York, Boston, Minneapolis, San Francisco and Paris, etc. CHOICE also received financial support from His Holiness’s Private Office, Dept of Health (CTA), Akemi Takahashi, and many other individuals.

Despite being a small organization, CHOICE has achieved tremendous success in its outreach programs and training of trainers (TOTs).  CHOICE has been especially effective in connecting Tibetan People Living with HIV/AIDS to the Department of Health, CTA and various Government of India’s run hospitals where they can avail free drugs and standard treatment.

While creating a unique legacy and being the first ever and the only Tibetan-run NGO on HIV/AIDS, we (CHOICE Team) feel privileged and honored to be a part of this important initiative.

During the initial years of CHOICE, there was hardly any Governmental or Non-Governmental Organization dedicated to HIV/AIDS work. However, over the years, CHOICE is proud and contented to witness a growing interest as well as efforts in addressing this issue from individuals, other organizations and the stake holders.

The Department of Health under Central Tibetan Administration, in particular, have put major efforts on HIV/AIDS awareness campaign, training for nurses and HIV victims, creating network among HIV positive people, and providing financial assistance to HIV/AIDS patients. This is supported by the regional hospitals and the NGOs.

Therefore, in the current situation of heightened and invigorated involvement from numerous stake holders, CHOICE at times witness overlapping and duplication of campaigns on HIV/AIDS.  In addition, CHOICE continues to be affected by the lack of human resources and the dwindling source of funds.

Consequently, on behalf of CHOICE and other active members, with great regret, I take the privilege to inform and apprise your kind self of the decision to dissolve CHOICE w.e.f. August 1, 2013.

However, we are confident that other HIV/AIDS related effort spearheaded by the Department of Health (CTA) continues to thrive among our community.

CHOICE is indeed a wonderful humanitarian and spiritual journey we would cherish throughout our lives. CHOICE sincerely acknowledges the support and the encouragement received from you all that helped achieve the successes thus far. We take this opportunity to express our gratitude to all the Governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations and individuals who made this success possible. Thank You.

Sincerely,

Phuntsok Chomphel

Executive Secretary / Co-founder
